A volume target turns counterproductive the moment hitting the number starts forcing thin, redundant, or off-strategy pages. The target serves you right up until it begins to override quality, and then it works against you. The pivot is target-drives-quality-down: as long as you can meet the number with strong, distinct, on-strategy pages, the calendar is doing its job of keeping output steady. When the only way to hit the count is to pad, repeat, or publish pages that do not fit the plan, the number has stopped helping and the target should give. The “hit your quota no matter what” instinct is exactly what trips this line.
The reason is that a volume target is a means, not an end. It exists to enforce consistency and momentum, which are genuinely valuable. But the actual goal is a growing body of pages that rank and serve users, and that goal is quality-bound. Once the calendar pushes you to manufacture filler to make the number, every forced page adds dilution rather than value, dragging on the site’s quality signal and competing with your own stronger pages. The target is then optimizing the wrong thing, counting outputs while quietly degrading outcomes.
You can usually see the line being crossed in the work itself. The tells are pages written to fill a slot rather than answer a real query, topics split or repeated just to reach a count, and pages that wander off your strategy because the strong ideas ran out before the quota did. When you notice yourself reaching for any of those to hit the number, the target has crossed from useful constraint to active liability, and the honest move is to let the number slip rather than the quality.
So treat the target as a servant with a clear off-switch. Keep it while it produces strong, on-strategy pages, and the day it starts forcing filler, drop the number and publish fewer good pages instead. Reset the calendar to a volume you can hit at full quality, and let the target flex around the work rather than the work bending to the target. Protect the quality; the count is negotiable.
